Abstract/Notes Postpartum bleeding is the important cause in maternal death case, especially in developing countries. Bleeding which cause rapid lost of blood occurred due to atonia, where there is no soft uterus contraction. One effort to overcome atonia utery bleeding is by performing uterus massage, but if the bleeding cannot be stopped, bimanual internal compression should be initiated. The aim of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of bimanual internal compression in emergency situation relating to atonia utery. The study tok place in “Al-Hikmah” delivery clinic located in Serangan village, Sukorejo district of Ponorogo regency. The subjects under study consisted of 47 women who suffered from atonia utery during their deliveries. The subjects wre divided into two groups consisting of 20 women who were not treated with bimanual internal compression and a group of 27 women who were given bimanual internal compression act. The study was carried out after an ex-post-facto analytical research design, where analyses made use of the existing birth records maintained by the midwives who have provided assistance in the respective deliveries between 2002 to 2006. Chi-square test was adopted the impact of the actions upon stopping the atonia utery related bleeding. Analyses discovered that most (50%) of bleeding cases on woman who did not receive bimanual internal compression did not stop, and tey should be taken to hospital. In the case of te women who given bimanual internal compression treatment, almost 92,6% of their bleeding stopped. Hi-square analyses proved that bimanual internal compression was significantly able to stop bleeding caused by atonia utery.
